Apple Commands

1)    sshd

Beginning with Mac OS X 10.0.1 Apple now allows the user to turn the SSH server on from the SystemPreferences->Sharing panel by Enable Remote Login. This allows SSH logins to your machine. You do not need to turn this on to use ssh to connect to other systems.

For the more hard-core, comand line folks... The StartupItem for SSH only tries to start the sshd server if you have set the SSHSERVER flag to YES in your /etc/hostconfig. The default Mac OS X implementation has this set to NO. You can have sshd start automatically each time you boot by editing your /etc/hostconfig to contain the following:

SSHSERVER=-YES-

If you already have the sshd daemon running, you'll need to kill it and any other utilities that it is using before starting the OpenSSH implementation. The simplest thing for many users will just be rebooting.

2) Printing

I've had this problem more than once. Do you have both a wireless and wired network? I think I see this problem (OS X just doesn't recognize the printer as being the same one you configured) whenever I change my network setup. I think what happens is that when you install the printer, it logs the *route across the network* to find it. If you change the network at all (e.g. LAN IP ranges, whether it connects by cable or wireless, how AppleTalk is routed, or which router/switch ports the computer and printer are connected to), OS X kind of "loses its way" to the printer. Normally, even when this is happening, it can see the printer perfectly well - it just doesn't recognize it as being the same printer you installed (because the route to it is somehow different). Usually, if you re-create the printer - and don't screw around with the network any more (!), it works fine again. It's a bit odd. I don't know exactly how OS X find network printers. They don't have IPs.
